Asia Pacific Casino Wars: Burswood Casino Targets High Roller VIPs, by Greg Tingle - 25th February 2011

G'day everyone. It's yet another episode of the Australian casino wars, with a dash of the Australians VS the Singaporeans, with a dash of Aussie political wars to boot. Media Man and Gambling911 with your special report from the war zone...

James Packer's Burswood Casino is continuing to feel a bit of pressure from from a couple of resorts in Singapore, as its high roller takings drops about 14%, but it would be worse, and most experts expect Crown Limited casinos in Australia to close the gap within 6 months.

Crown, owner of Burswood Entertainment Complex, Melbourne’s Crown Casino and a range of entities in the Asia Pacific just released its first-half financial report.

We learned of a 32.9% lift in first half net profit to $153.14 million on a "solid" performance from its Australian non-VIP businesses and non-gaming operations.

Normalised net profit, which takes into account variations via "theoretical win rate" against VIP gamblers and pre-opening costs in respect of the jointly owned City of Dreams casino-resort in Macau, thanks to the Ho family connection, was 13.9% higher at $165.8 million.

VIP revenue dropped 8% to $290.8 million, a result of the opening of 2, yes 2, new casino "integrated resorts" in downtown Singapore.

At Burswood, VIP revenue dropped 14.3% to $78.3 million on turnover of $5.8 billion.

Normalised earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation was $107.3 million, down 4.4%, while normalised revenue was pretty steady at $376.8 million.

Crown chief exec Rowen Craigie told the press that the VIP market was growing strongly, evidenced by the uplift of the VIP market in Macau.

"The Singapore casinos are going gang-busters - they're probably the two most profitable casinos in the world at the moment," Craigie said.

"So, the market is there. The challenge for us is to replace the business we've lost to Singapore with new business out of China but also new business out of South East Asia.

"What Macau has proved and what Singapore will also prove is that additions to the supply of quality-integrated resorts triggers the demand."

Craigie said facility upgrades in progress at Crown and Burswood would help boost Crown's share of VIP numbers.

The casinos owned and operated by Crown Limited also had to focus on providing quality service, and Crown had to ensure that it had the right sales force in key markets to persuade well to do gamblers (whales and good size dolphins) to come down under to Australia.

Craigie advised many VIP gamblers from South East Asia were now choosing to play their games of choice locally, and some of Crown's key VIP customers were back and forward between Australia, Macau, Las Vegas, and Singapore.

The boss said an upgrade of facilities by Australian rival casino operator Tabcorp would also make a visit to Australia by VIP gamblers a more attractive proposition.

"We know they property hop," Craigie said.

Crown also announced today that it had received regulatory approval in Nevada and Pennsylvania in the U.S to convert a "preferred instrument" held in Cannery Casino Resorts into equity. Upon conversion, Crown will hold a 24.5% share in Cannery. Craigie said that once the conversion took place, Crown would be entitled to share in any profit distribution and a seat on Cannery's management committee. This marks a return to American gaming and casino action for Crown, which successfully got out of a few deals over the past few years, preferring to cut their losses and run. One such well documented deal was March 2009 - Crown abandoned a $US1.8 billion deal to acquire Cannery. Crown chief financial officer Ken Barton said the Cannery investment was valued in Crown's books at $US60 million ($A59.54 million).

Craigie said Crown "still needs to see what happens" with the Cannery investment. "In terms of future plans for Cannery, we're only a 25% shareholder. That's a wait-and-see," Craigie said.

Crown said trading in the new calendar year had so far been good, however the first 7 weeks of 2011 was not comparable to the same period in 2010 due to the difference in the timing of Chinese New Year. Chinese people are very suspicious, and the calender effects their gambling habits. Craigie said Crown Melbourne was benefiting from capital refurbishments.

However, Burswood had been affected by complex-wide renovations during the half year. Crown's revenue for the 6 months to December 31, 2010 grew 0.8% to $1.2 billion. Crown declared an interim dividend of 18cc per share, with 10.8 cents franked, steady on the dividend in the prior corresponding period. Shares in Crown were down 18 cents at $8.20.

Numerous media and gaming insiders have told Media Man that both Crown's Burswood Casino in Perth and Crown Casino in Melbourne are fully expected to close the gap on Singapore casino resorts in the coming months, as Crown and competitor, Tabcorp (Star City in 'Sin City' Sydney) continue to lobby the Australian government for enhanced facilities at major Australian airports to ensure high rollers VIP's are looked after like gold, easing restrictions on paperwork ala immigration and other entry requirements. Ah, let the Australian casino wars and Aussie political fun and games wars continue. Incoming!

Sin City Sydney: Darling Habour Gets Star City Rub, by Greg Tingle - 25th February 2011

G'day everyone. It's yet another huge gambling and casino news updated from down under in Australia. We've got political fun and games, lovers VS haters, man VS machine, Big Brother VS The People, and you get the idea. Media Man and Gambling911 with your regular Aussie round up...

Sin City Sydney's Darling Harbour, in the shadow of Chinatown and neighbouring Pyrmont, is to get a make over, and tourism tied in with the revamped Star City casino are in the think of the action. Well darlings, the money have to come from somewhere doesn't it!

The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre is going to be a huge part of the revamp to. The expo centre has hosted 1000s of events, trade shows and the likes over the years.

Property - land developer Lend Lease's will be doing a $6 billion or so redevelopment of Barangaroo, on the east side of Darling Harbour.

Your favorite bank and ours NOT, the Commonwealth Bank, will have their 'Piggy Bank' (satire) in the Darling Walk region.

Lend Lease chief exec, Steve McCann, advised Barangaroo was set to start work later this year.

Star City casino is of course also getting a massive makeover, and readers will know its budget is close to 900 million bucks. Insides tip it may go over budget, and their parent, Tabcorp, do have funds available. Watch out for a 1000 new slots, more entertainment facilities and yet more places to sink a cold one and grab a bite. Oh, try not to get pissed (drunk) before putting too much money in the "one armed bandits". Unless your as rich as Star City mega fan Jon Bon Jovi, you better show some restraint.

The development plans were released a fortnight ago and have only just been leaked to us, so better late than never hey punters.

Top brass from the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre joined the director of communication and marketing for Barangaroo, Scott Maclean, and MD of Star City, Sid Vaikunta, to promote the redevelopments at a media bash at the Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Expo in Melbourne, home to the original 'Underbelly' down under.

Chief exec of Sydney Events, Jon Hutchison, said "NSW businesses and the NSW government are working closely together to ensure Sydney remains the Asia-Pacific's leading business events destination for decades to come. The developments represent a once-in-200-year opportunity to transform Sydney's CBD waterfront precincts for the business travel market and leverage the next phase of Sydney's economic growth."

The redevelopment of the Entertainment Centre is set to cost $550 million.

In a surprise move to rock concert and event fans, the Sydney Entertainment Centre will be torn down - yep, gone! It will be replaced and an entertainment auditorium will be built. Entertainment junkies, don't worry. The Sydney Ent Centre should still be standing for another year or two, before its on the scrap heap. Expect the whole development to be complete by 2015.

The $860 million Star City casino redevelopment will transform the casino into a "world-class venue", with a 3000-seat multipurpose events centre, an extra 172-room hotel, adding to the existing 350 hotel rooms and 130 apartments, and more restaurants, and don't forget more table games and slots.

Sydney Events believes the project will add $530 million to the NSW economy in years ahead.

So, whether games, food, drinks, entertainment or tourism is your poison, they will have something for you. A devilish, daring and impressive development if there ever was.

We're proud of you 'Sin City' Sydney, and kudos to Star City (even if we do own shares in your competitor). Ah, let the tourism and Aussie casino and business wars continue. Incoming!

Tabcorp And Crown Want Aussie Gvt To Lift Game On High Rollers, by Greg Tingle - 24th February 2011

G'day punters, casino millionaires and billionaires, politicians, legal eagles, one and all. Australia's leading gaming companies, namely Tabcorp (Star City etc) and Crown Limited (Crown Casino and Burswood Casino etc) are demanding the the Australian government lift its game to help down under become more high roller whale friendly, especially at our international airports in Sydney and Melbourne. We probe and examine if the fact that the Gillard government not officially being a big fan of gambling is a factor, or if its a smoke screen hiding something more sinister. Media Man and Gambling911 hit the runway as we play plans, trains, automobiles (and politics)...

Tabcorp And Crown Limited To Aussie Government: Lift You're Game For High Rollers In Airports...

Tabcorp casinos big wig Larry Mullin has joined the pack of not happy Aussie casino and gambling tycoons and top brass telling the federal government to lift their game - streamline customs and immigration paperwork and checks for Oriental high-rollers flying down under into Australia, backing up his Crown Casino equal Rowen Craigie. Mullin advised making visas easier to obtain and installing "VIP customs lounges" at major airports to allow high-roller customers to avoid unsatisfactory queues should be seriously considered, and pronto. He said Australia needed to consider a similar model to Singapore, which has created a private lounge to fast-track customs and immigration processing for high-rolling whales. It's understood revenue from Singapore's two land based casinos opened last year is already close to $US5 billion a year. "The customers and the customer experience is everything. That first and last impression is so helpful, especially after long flights. "You go into Singapore, they pick you up in a golf cart and drive you to a private area and there's a government official in the receiving area. You almost feel as if you are going into a hotel experience, that was the seamlessness of it. I understand why you need the processes that are there, but I think we need to explore and get as fast as we can similar type of conveniences here." Mullin said Crown Casino chief exec Rowen Craigie was heading up the discussions with the federal government in his role as the president of the Australasian Casino Association. Craigie last month said the improvements were necessary in order for Australia to plug into the lucrative middle and upper-class Chinese tourism market and compete with Singapore. Tabcorp, which will launch its first personalised jet service for high-roller customers tomorrow, generates less than 10% of its casino revenues from high-rollers. But it is the fastest-growing arm of its business, with revenues from VIP customers up 36% to $32.9 million in the December half. Tabcorp is understood to have spent about $40m leasing the 14-seater jet which came on high recommendation by rock star Bon Jovi, a friend of Mullin. It will start transiting in punters from Asia tomorrow. The firm, which is spending a massive $960m on renovating its flagship Star City casino in Sydney, is now also throwing in $160m on its domestic and international VIP businesses to upgrade digs, improve and expand private gambling facilities and lease two private jets. Originally the jets were going to be purchased, but the bean counters thought better to lease. Mullin also advised Tabcorp, which plans to demerge its casino division by mid-year, was planning to work with the New South Wales government on tourism campaigns targeting potential casino customers. "As our project gets more mature we would like to get better placed in that," he said. Various gambling experts have leaked to Media Man that they expect Crown and Tabcorp to have a better year than last, as well as improved government dealings.

Tatts Gets Profit; Good News Finally...

Tatts Group Ltd has reported a 3.4% lift in first half net profit as the gambling and gaming company sees signs of growth reemerging after set backs due to recent natural disasters such as floods and cyclones. Net profit rose to $149.91 million for the 6 months to December 31 from $144.96 million a year earlier, Melbourne based Tatts said in a statement on Thursday. Revenue jumped 17.4% to $1.62 billion. The firm declared a interim dividend of 10.5 cents per share, fully franked. Chief executive Dick McIlwain said the growth rates of the first half were showing signs of re-emerging after the disruption from the floods in Queensland and Victoria and Cyclone Yasi in Northern Queensland. Tatts said investors and other observers had enquired about the effect on the business from the natural disasters. The company said there was very little damage to company facilities while a significant number of agents and hosts suffered short term damage to electricity supply. Shares in Tatts declined 3.5 cents, or 1.4 per cent, to $2.435.

Aristocrat Leisure Shares Up; Back To Profit!

Airistocrat shares surged to a 3-month high today after the gaming machine supplier returned to the profit zone for 2010. Its stock rose 14 cents, or 4.4%, to $3.30 by 1029 AEDT, the best since November 25, 2010. Aristocrat Leisure today booked a net profit of $77.19 million for the year ended December 31, 2010, compared to a loss of $157.8m in 2009. Revenue fell 25.1% to $680.5m. Aristocrat declared a dividend of 1.5 cents per share, nil franked, compared to no final dividend in the prior year.

Melco Crown Makes US$16 Million Profit; Crown's James Packer Pleased; Could Have Been Much Worse...

Melco Crown Entertainment announced yesterday it recorded net income for the fourth quarter of 2010 of US$16.3 million (MOP130 million), compared with a net loss of US$89.7 million a year earlier. It was the company’s second consecutive quarterly profit. The gain in bottom-line results was driven by the year-over-year improvement in the operating performance at City of Dreams and Altira Macau, the company said. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) was US$133.8 million for the fourth quarter of 2010, as compared to adjusted EBITDA of US$2.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2009. Lawrence Ho, co-chairman and chief executive officer of Melco Crown Entertainment, said "our fourth quarter results demonstrate our success in driving operating leverage and in improving the profitability of our portfolio of assets. Our mass market table games business continues to grow and our rolling chip segment remains strong," he said. James Packer, who teamed up on the project via Melco Crown, is understood to have been pleased with the result. The Packer family remains on good terms with the Ho's. It's one happy family again (or at least mainly), which is what we like to hear.

PartyGaming, PartyCasino, Bwin Do Deal With Las Vegas Land Based Casinos, by Greg Tingle - 15th February 2011

Property News Media

Websites

PartyCasino.com PartyPoker.com PartyBingo.com PartyGammon.com World Poker Tour

PartyGaming, the Gibraltar based iGaming powerhouse, is understood to have signed at least two major agreements to supply a gaming platform for online poker (and perhaps casino) to whale size Las Vegas land based casinos.

The Vegas casinos that Media Man and Gambling911 insiders hint are in the mix include MGM, Las Vegas Sands, Boyd Gaming and Caesars (former Harrahs Entertainment). It's unlikely a Donald Trump casino is in, as he's just sold at least one of his establishments. Trump is a fan of online casinos, but leaks say he is frustrated by what appears to be slow progress of igaming into mainstream America.

PartyGaming left the US after the UIGEA bill became law and a settlement towards $300 million was made with the DOJ (Department Of Justice).

The firm smartly snatched the opportunity to re-enter the US market if online gambling was ever legalized.

PartyGaming, which has now merged with Bwin, an Austrian based outfit is now ideally positioned to become a major force in the US, having also conducted b2b with other nations government departments, and has many a U.S senator and lawmaker on side, not to mention poker and casino associations and players.

Legalized online gambling in the US is tipped to be just around the corner, as legislators will provide a bill to congress for a vote.

Pro gambling groups and switched on politicians who can see the financial benefits are pushing hard for PartyGaming and a number other iGaming brands to go above board in the United States.

Party enjoys strong presence in the U.S (and Canada and Australia), with its Hollywood titles including Marvel Entertainment tie ins, plus the World Poker Tour brand which it owns and operates, and frequently gets airtime on television broadcasts in much of the western world. It's now or never for PartyGaming, and our leaks tell us its now, no bluff!

Readers, as always, bet with your head, not over it, and have fun.

*Media Man conducts some b2b with PartyGaming brands, as they do with dozens of other media, entertainment and gaming companies. Media Man is not a gaming company, but covers the sector, as they do over a dozen other industry verticals.

Crown Limited, Burswood Casino Plays Celeb Card, by Greg Tingle - 14th February 2011

G'day punters, high rollers, entertainment news junkies, casino, gambling and media millionaires and billionaires, journalists...one and all. The Australian casino wars roll on and down under's land based casinos continue to push the entertainment aspect, moving away from just offering casino games like slots and poker. This edition we see that James Packer's Crown Limited - the Burswood Entertainment Complex in Perth to be exact, pushes the envelopment a tad more on the celebrity and entertainment spectrum with an iconic 'Joker' (from Batman) tie in Media Man and Gambling911 take a ride in the Batmobile on route to Perth, Western Australia, with this special report. POW...

Heath Ledger was one of Australia's greatest actors of all time - perhaps the greatest.

James Packer's Burswood Casino was the place to remember the life and times of the late Heath Leger last night. The Ledger family do appreciate that some Australians may be felling a tad 'Heathed out', some 3 years after his passing away from a widely reported accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

The Heath's dad, Kim Ledger, last night was prepared to go on the record with "It’s a bit Heath overload at the moment."

Burswood Casino played host to HEATH, a fundraising tribute at Movies By Burswood, following last month’s opening of the Heath Ledger Theatre at the WA State Theatre Centre.

Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight (Batman franchise) were his most popular films and biggest moneymakers, and the later enjoyed a special showing at Burwood in the evening.

The family said on the special event "We’re here for the charity. Heath was a big giver," said Mr Ledger.

All funds raised from the gig will go to Telethon, the His Majesty’s Theatre Foundation and Australians in Film.

Supermodel - actress Gemma Ward, who was Ledger's flame leading up to his untimely death, wasn't present. Ward had jetted into Perth in the wee hours of Saturday morning to begin rehearsals tomorrow for 'The Ugly One', which will debut at the WA State Theatre Centre next month.

George Havuordas from Packed to the Rafters, and Home and Away’s Esther Anderson and Steve Peacocke, walked the red carpet, as the camera's flashed away.

The actors commented on Ledger...

"He was on Home and Away at one point," says Anderson. "I would love to have met him, I would love to have worked with him."

Havourdas said The Dark Knight, which snatched the Aussie a posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar, was his favourite Ledger flick.

"That was his best work. Can you imagine if he was still alive what he’d be doing and what he would have achieved? Its good to see the people of Perth keeping Heath’s spirit alive. He’s like a modern day James Dean almost."

A 20-minute doco about the actor’s life, Tribute to Heath by WA producer Liam Underwood, screened before The Dark Knight.

Ballajura mum and daughter Tanya and Stephanie Adams were among the fans who turned up.

"He was a Perth boy and it was very upsetting with what happened, plus we love The Dark Knight. It’s good fundraising and to see the turnout is great."

"If Heath in any way inspires these young people to do what they enjoy doing with their acting and to go on with it, that’s what he would have loved" said Kim Ledger.

A VIP afterparty was held at MINQ at Burswood Casino, and a few patrons were seen to later try their luck on the slots and tables games, while others just sat and chatted about their fondest Health memories.

Nevada Gambling Revenue Rises, Atlantic City Falls

It may not be leading economic indicator, but Nevada gambling revenues rose slightly in 2010 after a two-year decline attributed in part to the recession, the state gaming commission reported on Thursday.

The total "gaming win," $10.4 billion, represents a slight 0.1 percent increase compared to 2009, which saw a 10.4 percent decrease from the year before, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

The figures are rare good news for Nevada, which was particularly hard hit by the recession and continues to have the nation's highest unemployment and foreclosure rates.

But the rise only brings revenues back to about 2004 levels, according to Michael Lawton, financial analyst for the commission.

A closer look also reveals that the only area seeing an uptick in 2010 was the Las Vegas Strip, which increased by 4.1 percent, accounting for $5.8 billion of the state's total gaming revenue.

Downtown Las Vegas, Reno and other areas all saw decreases in gaming revenues last year.

The Las Vegas Strip's take mostly came from table games such as poker, craps and baccarat, a "high-roller" game played by international visitors and not the mass market, Lawton said.

Baccarat's take was $1.1 billion, most of it on the Strip, in 2010. Baccarat surpassed 21 as the dominant table game, Lawton said.

Revenue from slot machines was down everywhere, including the Strip, dropping 2.7 percent statewide last year and reaching the lowest total since 1997.

Lawton said this is probably due to "the everyday Joe, who's still coming, but not spending as much." (Credit: Reuters)

Atlantic City’s casino gambling revenue fell 13 percent in January, extending four years of decline at the New Jersey seaside resort beset by competition from nearby states.

Betting proceeds shrank to $255.4 million, the New Jersey Casino Control Commission said today on its website. Slot machine revenue at the 11 casinos slid 16 percent from a year earlier to $164.9 million, and table game winnings were down 8.3 percent to $90.5 million.

Gambling in the second-biggest U.S. casino market after Las Vegas has tumbled to $3.57 billion in 2010 from a peak of $5.2 billion in 2006 -- before Pennsylvania and Yonkers, New York, allowed slot machines. Competition also has come online in Delaware, Maryland and West Virginia.

Six of Atlantic City’s casinos went through bankruptcy or restructured debt during the financial crisis, and development has stalled. New York City is adding its first slots at a racetrack in Queens this year, intensifying competition in the region.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is overhauling regulators and creating a tourism district around the casinos to help halt the marketwide decline, which is hurting tax revenue.(Credit: Bloomberg)

Australian Media And Gambling Wars; Aussie Rich List, by Greg Tingle - 6th February 2011

G'day punters, journos, sports nuts, high rollers - casino whales, gambling millionaires and billionaires, media tycoons, politicians, insiders, outsiders, ... one and all. You know who you are. This is yet another instalment into the Australian media wars, with a dash of the Aussie rich list (a few gaming gambling types there) for good measure... Media Man and Gambling911 prob the Australian media business, and do the math on whose loaded up to the hilt down under...

James Packer and Lachlan Murdoch Rumoured To Be Worried With Network Ten News Progress...

After only two weeks on air, the Ten Network’s news evolution has reportedly come under scrutiny from new stakeholders James Packer and Lachlan Murdoch, thanks to a poor ratings performance. On Thursday night 6pm with George Negus attracted its lowest audience to date with only 398,000 viewers. The state based Ten Evening News at 6:30pm performed even worse, attracting only 362,000 viewers. The direction and performance of the George Negus fronted news vehicle is said to be of particular concern to new stakeholders Packer and Murdoch, the press reports. The pair reportedly told Ten Network executives they're worried that the international content of the bulletin is a turn-off for viewers. "Basically (an) email sent to Ten bosses said the predominance of overseas stories was unwise and indulgent and not calculated to build ratings," a well-placed source told Confidential. However, another Ten executive dismissed the report as "utter bollocks", going on to reaffirm the network’s long term commitment to the two-and-a-half hour news and current affairs block. "This is not a two-week plan or three-month one - you can't do what we've done and expect instant results - this is a long haul," a spokeswoman said. Rivals from other network’s have also expressed their thoughts on the $20 million a year investment in news, with one source pointing towards the timeslot winning lead-in 6pm with George Negus receives. "Aren't they conveniently overlooking the substantial lead-in it's provided every night by Ten's 5:00pm news which has always rated respectably for yonks?", said the source. On Thursday, David Gyngell, chief executive of the Nine Entertainment Company, described the performance as worse than he had expected.

Nine Network Presents Weekend 5pm New Slot...

The Nine Network will launched a new national 5:00pm weekend news bulletin Saturday, taking advantage of the Ten Network's recent departure from the timeslot. Nine's director of news and current affairs, Mark Calvert, told The Spy Report that the bulletin will be a permanent addition to the network's Saturday and Sunday schedule once the cricket season concludes tomorrow. Calvert unexpectedly announced the move via his Twitter account. "Missing having news at 5:00pm? Feeling abandoned by Channel Ten News at weekends? See Nine News first at five with Wendy Kingston," he posted. "Incredible flood rescue pix Nine News at 5:00pm. Yep, 5:00pm. You know...when Channel Ten News used to be on at weekends. Nine News at 5:00pm and 6:00pm. "Working harder than ever - Peter Stefanovic, Tracy Vo, Lizzie Pearl to get ready for Nine News first at 5:00pm then more at 6:00pm." Ten abandoned its national 5:00pm bulletin on weekends as part of its $20 million early evening revamp it unveiled two weeks ago. Since then, it has instead opted for a 6:00pm state-based service rivalling those on Nine and Seven. At this stage, it's unknown whether the half-hour bulletin will broadcast into Sydney and Brisbane when Nine's Sunday Afternoon Football returns on March 13. Nine's Afternoon News Hour will also continue to air weekdays from 4:30pm.

Australia's Richest Person Gina Rinehart Adds Value To Channel Ten Sports...

'Our Gina' loves sport, at least as far as it being a strong part of the line up on Network Nine. Fellow shareholders James Packer and Lachlan Murdoch also like sport, especially the cricket (sports betting connection), but Rinehart is more of an all rounder when it comes to the sports media side of the business. Our friends and Fairfax Media have secured a strong leak aka deep throat delivering the following: "She's tough, opinionated, sometimes difficult but never frightened". Rinehart is understood to be very happy with her 10% per cent stake in the network, and intends on getting her money's worth (and continuing to exercise her clout). Packer and Murdoch recently told Ten executives that while they like sport, they believe the network more than they should be, particularly for AFL broadcasting rights. The late great media and gambling tycoon, Kerry Packer, put aside an AFL $780 million deal over five years, not long before his passing away, but Packer Jr may want to talk it about a bit more. The AFL is set to receive the $1 billion at its next contract commencing at 2012. Ten wants to renegotiate its deal with Channel Seven over AFL coverage. David White, the sports director of Ten, has advised analysts that returns from AFL over the past season were not good. It is anticipated Ten will go after an improved ratio with Seven of their share of future fees, or demand an allocation of higher-rating match ups. Under the existing 7 - 10 agreement both networks must bid together, however if Ten is unable to improve its payment or game quality ratios, the deal might collapse. "Ten now has two directors (Packer and Murdoch) who would support the move to walk," a leak said. Rinehart may lobby to retain the agreement in support of Kerry Stokes, the owner of Seven. The word is her main reason for investing a dab of her $4.75 billion wealth for 10% of Ten is political influence. He took note of the success of the advertising campaign against the mining tax and sees the powerful control of the media on the political landscape, and those who work in it. Packer snatched his 17.9% take in Ten ($128 million) to boost his political clout, and then went on to selling half to Murdoch. JP likes the gambling and sport connection, as do many NRL and AFL clubs ala Rabbitohs - Star City and his own Crown Casino - Melbourne Storm baby. Packer gets on well at this stage of the game with Australian Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, and they are understood to enjoy a spot of golf from time to time. Packer and Murdoch famously had a bite with him at Crown Casino months ago. This past Thursday Conroy announced amendments to sport's anti-siphoning list, allowing free-to-air networks to show live sport on their digital channels! This falls into line with the ministers strategy to move Australia quickly away from analog TV. Ten has the only sports-dedicated digital channel (One) at this time. Should Packer and Murdoch be successful in convincing the Network Ten board that One is too costly and must be closed up, or switch programming, it would automatically undermine Conroy's plan to use sport to boost along the uptake of digital TV. It would also quite possibly piss off the big wigs at the NRL and AFL. AFL games shown live on a free-to-air network's principal channel in Melbourne could be shown live on its digital channel in New South Wales and Queensland, rather than suffer piss weak ratings, as Ten suffered in Sydney and Brisbane, especially on Saturday evenings. At the moment Queensland AFL fans who want Seven's coverage of Friday nights must subscribe to pay TV operator Foxtel, part-owned by companies associated with Packer and Murdoch. Shutting up shot on One would be a strategic step with a major goal being to protect this money machine, but a leaker revealed Packer would be hesitant to make too much noise or agro that might stir up regulators, with Crown Limited going so well. Best not have the government tests applied to the ownership of a casino licence if you follow. Packer is also keen to ramp up online gambling, expanding on his 50% owned Betfair. He's also aware of overseas gaming giants like PartyGaming eyeing off the Asia Pacific region, and its well known PartyGaming have the smarts to ink big government deals, as well as land based casino and b2b deals. Party also have the Hollywood branded deals performing well, so Party could be an opportunity or a threat to Packer, depending upon which way the wind is blowing, and what Australian politicians decide will be law in the online space, with the Liberal Party calling for full regulation, something PartyGaming, Media Man and we understand, Betfair, are all keen to see happen. In will also get rid of any bad eggs in the iGaming space down under. Back to the traditional news media, if Ten walks from its AFL deal with Channel Seven, it would therefore leave a 7 - Foxtel consortium as the only bidder worth their salt. Sen. Conroy "decoupled" the existing anti-siphoning arrangement where free-to-air on-sold the bottom 4 games a week to pay TV, permitting Foxtel to bid directly. Gyngell's Network Nine reserving its art of war strategy for NRL rights which expire in 2012, it is unlikely the Australian Football League will be able to hold a auction for the rights. So, no challenger to Seven for the top 4 games and Nil to Foxtel for the other 4, the AFL may not get their $1 billion bucks with JP and Murdoch Jr paying less for rights, helping make sure of continuing solid profit margins in Foxtel and Fox Sports. 'Our Gina' out in the Wild Wild West - West Australia, looks to be a key player in all of this, and not just because she's loaded and is now down under's richest woman. Yep, politics, power and money all take a seat in the box beside professional sports being broadcast on Australian TV. Don't even start us on Aussie TV being broadcast on the internet. That's all sports, but stay turned in the coming days and weeks for more on the art of war that is Australian news media.

Virgin Hotels 'at least two years away' - 1st February 2011

Sir Richard Branson has said that his much-anticipated new hotel brand Virgin Hotels is still two years away from launching.

According to reports in US media, he told the American Lodging and Investment Summit that finding sites for the new hotel chain wasn't proving easy, although he did confirm a few places where travelers will be able to enjoy Virgin's almost-legendary hospitality.

San Diego and Washington DC are likely candidates, and Branson also announced that one of the the first sites will be in New Mexico, overlooking the spaceport which will send his Virgin Galactic tourist flights into space.

He also told conference attendees that each hotel will be different, saying that putting a Virgin stamp on the hotels wasn't enough and that the goal was to be the "funnest" hotel for guests to go to.

Fans of the outlandish British billionaire who are disappointed by the wait can take solace in exciting new hotels from America's favorite businessman Donald Trump, scheduled for the not-too-distant future.

The luxury hotel brand is set to open its first properties outside of the US in the coming months - the Trump Ocean Club Panama and the Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto are both expected in the spring.

The hotels, which will be added to the five-star portfolio of properties in New York, Las Vegas and Chicago, are built to the exacting standards of Donald and his daughter Ivanka and are both record breakers - the Panama property is the tallest and largest building in Latin America and the Toronto hotel the tallest residential building in Canada.

Property News Media: Clubs Reject Wilkie's Pokie Plan

ClubsAustralia has told the parliamentary committee on gambling that the Federal Government’s plan to force limits on how much people can bet on poker machines will not reduce problem gambling.

Executive Director of ClubsAustralia Anthony Ball told the committee that the technology has failed to reduce problem gambling in Norway, which is the only country in the world to have installed mandatory pre-commitment technology on poker machines.

“The Norwegian Government admits that the rate of problem gambling has actually increased over the past 3 years. Not surprisingly, gamblers have simply switched from poker machines to the internet where credit card betting is allowed.

“Mandatory pre-commitment in Norway has failed to deliver what it promised. The country is barely one third of the size of NSW, and yet the Norwegian Government has managed to link just 2,300 machines in the last 2 years. At that rate it’ll take more than 170 years to network all of Australia.

“The anti-gambling lobby has tried to use the existence of pre-commitment technology in Norway as justification for their refusal to trial the system in Australia.

“But this claim ignores a recommendation from the Productivity Commission that the technology should be trialled in one state or territory.

“There has never been a trial of this technology in Australia. Andrew Wilkie knows this, the Federal Government knows this, anyone who has read the Productivity Commission’s report into gambling knows this.

“Experts are lining up to reveal this technology for the multi-billion dollar lemon that it is.

“Already Australia’s leading problem gambling researcher has said mandatory pre-commitment won’t reduce problem gambling and could actually delay people from getting help.

“Forcing clubs to spend billions of dollars on a network so the Federal Government can know how much people are gambling will only kill off clubs and their support for community and sporting groups.

“Andrew Wilkie has already admitted this technology will have a central database with people’s gambling history recorded. Australians have made it abundantly clear they simply won’t accept such an intrusion into their spending and leisure habits,” Anthony Ball said.

Below is what Andrew Wilkie told the ABC’s 7.30 Report on 2 September last year:

“Something like a swipe card or USB plug. Some means by which individual gamblers can be recognised by the machines and recognised by the network of machines, so we can keep track of problem gamblers, machines can shut down when a problem gambler has exceeded reasonable limits, where loss amounts per hour can be regulated.”

Joe Francis - Indicted Over Alleged $2M Gambling Debt, by Greg Tingle - 3rd February 2011

American (and now also Asia Pacific) gambling and real estate mogul, Steve Wynn, looks to now have soft porn king Joe Francis (Girls Gone Wild) by the balls. Media Man an affiliate of Girls Gone Wild, goes in hard and deep!

Francis has had big professional and personal issues with Wynn since his loss at the casino back in 2009.

Since the very public bitchfight Wynn had made numerous outlandish claims against Wynn including that Wynn has contracted Las Vegas Nevada bad guys to make him disappear - a contract on his life.

As Gambling911 (forum) readers would have noticed, numerous times over the past 6 months references were made to the spot apparently awaiting Francis's body in the Nevada Desert. Folks were frequently quizzing the progress on the hole earmarked for Francis circa March 2010 - October 2010. Do the readers know something we don't know?!

The Media Man Int team, also getting pissed with Francis' Girls Gone Wild affiliate program not paying up, modified their Media Man profile page "so it still works for us" a Media Man rep disclosed. That page in question can be found @ http://www.mediamanint.com/profiles/girls_gone.html The Media Man also built a Steve Wynn "tribute", with disclaimers, but added a new twist to the promos and you can see to believe it at http://www.mediamanint.com/profiles/wynn.html No, no horns of the devil on anyone - not yet anyway (but who knows what the future may hold)!

Back to business, Francis allegedly owes Wynn $2 million bucks, and made one payment of $500,000 towards the debt. If Francis is convicted he could face up to 4 years jail! Our friends over at entertainment and celeb website TMZ have a history of the Wynn - Francis sage in their archives, as does Gambling911 of course.

As we say at Media Man, crime does not pay. And, know the odds, plus Bet With Your Head, Not Over It, and that's speaking to you Francis.
