Aussie Mildura Casino Jewel Conflict Of Interest Disclaimer, by Greg Tingle - 26th May 2010

Australian casinos remain hot political fodder on both a state, national and international front. So hot is the current climate (despite buckets of rain on the east coast of Australia), local council meetings regarding casino proposals become international news. 'Casino Jack' would be proud... we think. Media Man and Gambling911 go undercover, so to speak, exploring the ever interesting relationships between local, state and federal government and the casino and gaming sector...

In the world of news media, politics, sports and gaming, Gambling911 and Media Man are of the general belief that disclaimers are a very good thing. The ethical and legal cases for such are almost bullet proof.

We get off the beaten track via planes, trains and automobiles, and "meet the locals" in regional "Jewel" of a country town, Mildura, rapidly cementing itself on the national and international tourism and casino map.

The region's proposed casino - resort will be down one advocate tomorrow when the council decides if the gaming - tourism proposal fits its Riverfront blueprint.

Cr Nick Cavallo yesterday advised he was unable to vote at tomorrow’s big Mildura Rural City Council meeting due to a good old fashioned conflict of interest. Almost sounds like some PR that would come from 1 or 2 of Melbourne's media savvy AFL clubs, but wait... the devil is in the detail...

"Under conflict laws, I will not be able to be involved in council discussions or voting in relation to the Jewel Entertainment Development, as a company in which I am a director has business relationships which are seen as a conflict under the Local Government Act," he said in champion and straight shooting fashion.

"The views put to me by hundreds of people from all walks of life throughout the municipality are of overwhelming support for the Jewel Development to go ahead.".

Local, state, national and international businesses are all tipped to benefit from Jewel. It's forecast that the development could also provide a shot in the arm for Richard Branson's Virgin Blue, and any other airlines and aviation firms that wish to plug into the action.

Gambling911 and field correspondents have been following the Mildura 'Jewel' matter for a number of months and have concluded to date that there is mega support, MegaJackpots style included... overall, for the casino to be built.

A Media Man spokesperson said "There's been enormous interest in the Mildura Jewel proposed casino case. News media, tourism heads, switched on MPs and locals can see the massive return on investment and boost to the regions economy, should the proposal go ahead. There's just a small by vocal group of detractors, but bean counters, locals and those wanting to see the region bounce back can see the benefits. The casino of course will abide by laws and regulations and is very big on responsible gambling. Tourism and lifestyle will take as much importance as the gaming element, and funds will be poured back into the community. The potential is there for Team Mildura Jewel and the locals to show the world what they can do, Mildura country charm style, with just a dash of Vegas neon lights".

Gambling911 and Media Man remind readers to bet with your head, not over it, and have fun.

New Australian Mildura Casino Tourism On Cards Thinks Airport, by Greg Tingle - 18th May 2010

Casino talk, mergers, take overs et al, continue to be all the rage down under in Australia, and land based casinos, online enterprises, and now even airports are buying into the excitement. Media Man and Gambling911 jet down to Victoria, in regional Mildura to catch the chit chat at the airport lounge...

A new casino for Mildura has been discussed with various levels of the community, government and business for almost a year now, and it appears that the majority of folks want a casino hotel, as it will create extra sustainable jobs and all kinds of tourism growth.

Tourism types including the airport services mob don't seem to need too much convincing of the benefits that will follow the development of a world class bricks and mortal casino in downtown Mildura. Of course you have the regular small but vocal mob of nay sayers, but roughly 80% - 90% across the board and looking forward to the first trucks rolling in, bricks being laid, and you get the picture.

Tourism in the beautiful Mildura region is enjoying an all-time high and would further rise significantly with a casino, its manager said.

CEO Bill Burke said there was a consistently growing trend of passenger numbers and last March was the busiest month in history.

Mr Burke said the airport was also introducing parking fees from June to help fuel the cost of upgrades and services, with free short-term parking for 3 hours and just $8 a day for long-term parking.

"As a hard number, we had more than 18,000 people travel through the airport in a month," Mr Burke said.

"Passenger numbers have been going up quite consistently for quite a long time. We’re experiencing quite consistent growth and it hasn’t tapered off with economic declines nationally. The average over the last 12 years is eight per cent per annum and through 2009 that went up to about 15 per cent due to the increase in services... and availability of a lot cheaper seats. The annual total is up to 198,000, so we will break 200,000 by July".

Mr Burke and a swag of tourism and casino experts say the record will be quite easily broken if the casino goes ahead. The casino will cost millions, bit it's likely to bring back the numbers 10 fold, even 100 fold, say many insiders.

It's yet to be determined if one can expect high-rollers aka "whales" turning up in their Lear Jets aka Gulf Stream jets, but stranger things have happened. Certainly the net cast far and wide will attract 1000s of "dolphins". Richard Branson's Virgin Blue would also likely plug right into the action and benefit.

This development in Victoria follows yesterday's report that James Packer owned Crown Casino is in talks with NRL Melbourne Storm about offering a sponsorship which would be "mutually beneficial". Sports tourism and media deals go hand in hand with the lucrative casino sector.

Eco tourism, wine tourism and sports tourism are just some of the niche sectors expected to kick on should the sleepy town get the neon lights of Vegas touch up!

Folks, the State Of Origin casino style has further ramped up with Sydney's Star City now perhaps preparing for another war down south with the Mildura "mobsters".

Tourism Victoria slogan 'You'll love every piece of Victoria'

Crown Casino In Sponsorship Talks With Melbourne Storm!, by Greg Tingle - 18th May 2010

Casino entrepreneurs, insiders, outsiders, punters and everyone one else... we saw it coming, but now its official (say our spies), Crown Casino is in talks with embattled Melbourne NRL team, the Storm and the footy team of the moment could soon be sponsored by gaming and leisure powerhouse, James Packer's Crown Casino aka Crown Limited. Media Man down under, proud shareholder in Crown, and Gambling911, crash tackle the situation...

It was only yesterday when Gambling911 and MM explored the curious (and headline grabbing) sponsorship and endorsements deals between the likes of PartyGaming - PartyPoker - Francesco Totti, Jaime Alguersuari and Giancarlo Fisichella, and the massively hyped and covered Virgin Racing - Full Tilt Poker deal. Full Tilt logos had previously been featured on the footy shorts of our fav NRL footy club in Sydney, Australia - Sydney Roosters (months prior doing business with Hulk Hogan and catching Hulk-A-Mania in the process). Red Bull might be soon plugging into the casino connection, following the Virgin Group lead. Red Bull is certainly getting the audience at the moment with Aussie Mark Webber coming off a series of high profile F1 race wins... more of the Bull - Crown Casino connection later... stay with us...

Australian sports media outlets like One HD, NineMSN - Wide World of Sports are lapping it up, as are sports sponsorship publications.

Media Man's been saying for years that its all a battle for the entertainment dollar, audiences, headlines and event numbers, and you get the idea. There's only so much money out there for both corporates and punters to invest it, and only the best will attract the audiences and the dollars that follow, be it AUD, EURO, CAN, FR, USD or some other denomination. By the way, you got to love Multi Currency Casinos, but that's another story...

Australian and Asia Pacific casino, gaming (and lifestyle) king, James Packer, and his inner circle, are onto something big...

Packer is in the entertainment, tourism and lifestyle industry. Casinos and betting only form part (albeit a very important part of the machine). To Packer's credit, he also gives back to society, be it GenerationOne (creating jobs), or if our birdies got it right, saving a struggling NRL footy team, in this case the Melbourne Storm. NRL (and AFL) players and management are celebrated and passionate fans of the establishment, knowing for making a few colourful headlines over the years with significant Aussie piss ups. Mind you, in recent years Crown security was basically forced to clamp down on the amount of drinks being served, to protect punters, reputation and legal eagle considerations. It's a shame 'Mr Sin' Abe Saffron, nights ago showcased on 'Australian Families Of Crime', isn't around anymore to quiz on the matter. 'Our Abe' was quite the liquor merchant and entrepreneur when a massive black market for drinks thrived on Australia's east coast.

Back to modern day and Crown headquarters...

The Crown empire advises the sponsorship talks re in a"very early stage" are the result of a long, ensuring and healthy relationship between the parties, and a synergy of interests.

A bit of background...

Melbourne Storm is owned by a Valimanda, which is owned by News Ltd a part of News Corporation, which owns a 25% Foxtel. Another 25% of Foxtel is owned by Consolidated Media Holdings, which is controlled by Aussie Casino king James Packer.

Foxtel holds the pay-TV rights to the National Rugby League, and wants a bloody successful team in Melbourne, Australia (also home to Crown Casino - 'A World Of Entertainment' wear you can 'Wear The Crown'!

More synergies...

Melbourne Storm-Valimanda-News Ltd - Premier Media Group, half-owned by News Ltd. Operated by Fox Sports, which provides approx 100% of the sports "content" on Foxtel, (including its NRL coverage). The other co-owner of Premier Media is the Packer controlled CMH (Consolidated Media Holdings).

Melbourne Storm can smartly approach suitable potential sponsorship partners. In the drivers seat or pole position, just happens to be Packer's Crown...with a major interest in the success of the NRL on television, and a man who shares that business interest with Rupert Murdoch, whose global company owns and controls Storm. Sounds like a fantastic group of synergies and a match made in heaven.

The Formula One Motorsport Connection...

Mark Webber at Monaco just became the first Aussie driver since Sir Jack Brabham in 1959 to win the event. The Red Bull team must be taking sponsorship or is that, ambush marketing lessons under Kym Illman. Illman also has shared a few of his marketing ideas and deals with yours truely - Tingle, Max Markson and cricket and poker pro - Shane Warne...Ok, back to matters at hand, Red Bull is official, but they sure know who to get the Red and Yellow on the TV, mags, newspapers and websites. We wonder how many people actually buy the drink, but Red Bull more resembles a media and marketing company these days. Heard of McDonalds Real Estate (hamburgers)...the product made the money at first, but then the brand and the money machine took on a life of its own.

Red Bull has a floating 'Energy Station' which sits in the harbour at Monaco. It's a multi-level floating gin and fun palace that sports a bar, restaurant and its own private pool! Virgin's Richard Branson has not been spotted their (yet), but comon', invite RB and Virgin Racing over. It's all good fodder for the news media.

Red Bull team chief Christian Horner was even thrown in drink of the team's floating palace, dubbed the "floaterhome". Almost makes James Packers' guitar smashing at the City Of Dreams, Macau look mild in comparison, buy JP made up for it by jumping off his boat in Sydney Harbour we understand.

"I think Mark's had the week of his life," Horner said.

"To win two GPs in a row, including the Monaco GP which is probably the most prestigious on the calendar, is a very proud day for the whole of Red Bull Racing.

"And we didn't only win Monaco, but finished first and second, so it is a great day for the team."

Back To The Crown Casino - Melbourne Storm Deal - Is The Ink Dry Yet?

Sources at Crown confirmed that "preliminary talks" commenced between the casino and the Storm last Friday.

A Storm spokesman also confirmed that a "more general sponsorship discussion" had taken place with Crown. A second meeting is scheduled for next week at this stage.

"We don't support individual AFL clubs because that would be unfair to pick one club over all the others, but we do give quite broad support to the AFL and to many clubs when it comes to staging major functions". Melbourne Storm is different, this is the only rugby league team in Victoria, and we think there are a number of areas where this (sponsorship deal) can be mutually beneficial."

Crown Limited has a relationship (business and personal) with Melbourne Storm that dates back several years. The club has held a number of big fund-raising events at the casino, including a mid-season ball and its end-of-year presentation ball.

Folks, Crown and The Storm are certainly whipping up a hurricane. Sounds like if MM and G911 birdies are right on the money, soon enough Storm NRL will be wearing the crown and in an out of this 'World Of Entertainment'. Cheers, and see you at the bar!

Crown Casino Client Ferrari Stolen With Virgin Valet, by Greg Tingle - 14th May 2010

Down under in Melbourne, Australia, one casino punter was feeling extremely lucky, pouncing on an opportunity to steal (not win) a Ferrari F430, when a casino valet handed him the keys. Media Man and Gambling911 follow the story in high speed pursuit...

Melbourne Police have now arrested the formally lucky punter after a Crown Casino valet mistakenly handed over the keys to a Ferrari F430 Spider and he took off for a joyride lasting half a day to Coolaroo of all places.

The 32-year cheeky fella was reportedly wearing a tracksuit when a casino valet gave him the keys to the bright red, V8 supercar about 12.30am today.

Police advise the punter drove north up the Tullamarine Freeway but was pinched by police about 6.30am as he fuelled up at a servo in Coolaroo, on Melbourne's outer northern region.

"He is currently assisting police with their inquiries," she said.

Forensic police will today examine the car, which has been towed to a holding yard in Campbellfield.

The attendant at the servo advised the man filled the beast up with petrol before police nabbed the bandit.

"He just filled up with petrol, came in here, paid for it and the cops were outside and just got him," he said.

"The cops I think were already after him."

The happening starting to generate a serious of state, national and international news stories, with Melbourne 3AW radio enjoying banter with a witness "Mark".

"Someone walked out of the casino past me and the security guard, got in and drove off,". The security guard said to me - because he only had an old tracksuit on - and he said 'you can't pick 'em can you'."

Crown Casino spokesman, top brass, Gary O’Neill said the incident was a first for the casino. He explained customers using valet parking were provided with a ticket to be returned to the casino parking attendant when time to collect your car.

"It has happened in the past from time to time that people lose their tickets, and in these circumstances we ask for proof of identification and a valid driver’s licence. Those procedures were followed on this occasion," he said.

"The procedures that we have followed in the past have not resulted in this particular incident, but that’s not to say our system is perfect," he said.

"We’re cooperating fully with the police investigation."

Mr O’Neill said the incident had been caught on film by their CCTV cameras and the footage would be handed over to police. Crown Casino is known for its world class security, as is it's Sydney competitor Star City. The Australian land casino industry was forced to upgrade security in recent years following a succession of undesirable incidents. Industry insiders sometimes joke about the plastic handcuffs initiative and footy and cricket stars getting pissed at casino events but this matter was very serious in nature. The casino wants its VIPs, high-rollers, whales and the like to know that their transport is in safe hands at Crown Casino.

Melbourne's Police 'Highway Patrol' is known to be world class and its understood that at least 99% of police corruption as featured on Network Nine 'Underbelly' has been cleaned up.

Crown tag lines include 'World Of Entertainment' and 'Wear The Crown'.

Mr James Packer, Australian and Asia Pacific casino and gaming king, remains the owner of Crown Limited. He also owns Burswood Casino aka Burswood Entertainment Complex in Western Australia, and has a number of interests in Macau and Britain, as well as new media - internet entities. Packer remains passionate for sport, meeting Virgin king Richard Branson last year at the Melbourne F1 Grand Prix and enjoys polo, as did his late father Kerry Packer.

Ok you want more on the sports car...we hear you...

The F430 went on sale in 2005 with the Spider convertible going for a cool $444,000 AUD, plus options and on-road costs.

F430 production was ceased earlier this year and will be replaced by the flashy458 Italia, which we understand has a two-year waiting list.

Casinos have long been associated with fast cars (and fast, sexy women). In recent years the online casino and online poker sector has plugged into the demo, with PartyGaming and PKR offering sports car as high level prizes.

A few months ago PartyGaming and PKR Poker had a Porsche up for grabs, but no one qualified to win. Not to be disheartened, Party's casino and poker brands are once again offering dream machine grand prizes...

Last week Richard Branson's Virgin Racing came to sponsorship terms with online poker powerhouse Full Tilt Poker. The massive exposure of Virgin's F1 involvement on a international scale was a key reason the deal went ahead.

A number of weeks before the public Virgin - Full Tilt Poker deal, PartyGaming's PartyPoker signed up F1 superstars Jaime Alguersuari and Giancarlo Fisichella as brand ambassadors. Poker legend and World Poker Tour mainstay Mike Sexton remains the global PartyPoker ambassador. Last month following the sporting theme, PartyPoker also signed up Italian football legend Francesco Totti. The financial terms of the poker sponsorship deals are not currently known, as all parties appear to want to keep the details under wraps. Speaking of big names, rumours are circulating that PartyGaming may be in the midst of doing another deal and announcement with movie legend of Rambo and Rocky fame, Sylvester Stallone. Sly is featured in the Rambo online slot game, exclusive to PartyGaming.

PartyGaming Inks Deal With Aviation Club de France, by Greg Tingle - 9th May 2010

Websites

PartyPoker.com WPTPoker.com WPTCasino.com PartyCasino.com AviationClubdeFrance.com

PartyGaming has inked its B2B deal in France is applying for a French gaming licence.

This deal sees Aviation Club de France, a land-based gambling venue off the Champs Elysees in Paris and France's leading card room, maintain its world class status. The club is understood to sport in excess of 100,000 members. Aviation Club will join PartyGaming's French poker network when laws permits it to go ahead.

Aviation Club de France will join other gaming operators on the network including PartyGaming's own France-facing site, PartyGaming.fr, current French racing powerhouse Pari-Mutuel Urbain (PMU), and television broadcaster AB Groupe, following an agreement inked last month.

PartyGaming is keen to see the French gaming licence granted and don't foresee delays.

The licence system, which was approved by the French parliament last month, means that PartyGaming will switch off domestic casino and bingo when licensing is approved, resulting in the removal of annualised revenues of approximately $12m.

Media Man and its Casino News Media and Global Gaming Directory arms are very excited as to what this means to the continued global strategy and growth.

The gaming and news media world is following the progress of the PartyGaming deals in France to help evaluate their own strategy regarding gaming, government and land based projects.

Major U.S, Canadian and Australian based casinos and clubs are taking a very close look at this deal and how it pans out, advised a Media Man media and gaming spokesperson.

Australian Land Based Casino News Update, by Greg Tingle - 8th May 2010

PartyGaming, operator of PartyPoker, announced Monday that it had entered into a partnership with one of France’s largest television broadcasters. The deal will have PartyGaming provide a white label online poker room for AB Groupe, a company with 15 subscription channels and 52 million paid subscribers across France and other French speaking countries.

The new poker room will be called LuckyJeux (meaning Lucky Games) and will join PartyPoker.fr on PartyGaming’s French poker network. Also on the network is another white label PartyGaming product, the online poker room of Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU), which is France’s state-run horse racing monopoly. PartyGaming and PMU forged that deal near the end of March.

PMU will not be a monopoly for long, however, as earlier this month, French lawmakers approved a bill to legalize online gambling, eliminating the government monopoly. The timing of the agreement with AB Groupe was no coincidence. In a press release issued by PartyGaming, the online gambling giant’s CEO Jim Ryan said, “AB Groupe is a first rate addition to our French poker network and is consistent with our stated strategy of combining B2C and B2B offerings in newly regulated markets. Together with our recently announced alliance with PMU, we are in great shape ahead of the market opening and are excited about our prospects.”

AB Groupe owns the French television station RTL9, which made poker headlines at the beginning of April as a key player in a lawsuit filed by Ultra Internet Media (UIM), the parent company of Everest Poker, against Harrah’s, owners of the World Series of Poker (WSOP). In 2008, UIM signed a three-year agreement with Harrah’s to make Everest Poker the on-felt sponsor of the WSOP, a deal which would have UIM pay a total of $22.5 million. According to UIM, RTL9 substituted the Everest Poker logo with that of rival Full Tilt Poker in its broadcasts of the WSOP. Officials from Everest Poker, ESPN, and Harrah’s met in February 2009 to discuss the issue, but while promises were made to have Full Tilt’s logo removed, it remained in the broadcasts. UIM has sued Harrah’s for breach of contract and is withholding its 2010 payment.

In addition to the WSOP, RTL9 airs episodes of “Poker after Dark” and the National Heads-Up Poker Championship. The station’s website also advertises promotions with Full Tilt. On AB Groupe’s own website, the company offers a contest in which visitors can send a text message or call a pay-per-play phone number to enter a sweepstakes for a seat in the 2010 WSOP Main Event.
